Candle Making

Supplies:

  • Some old candle wax - we used the wax from candles that were mostly burned down already - cut into small pieces (like shavings)

  • A container to use as a mold - ideal is a pint milk container - or you can use a quart container cut down. Or you can use a bigger container and make a candle with multiple wicks. Or you can use a waxed paper cup.

  • Cotton kitchen twine or string - must be cotton, nylon won't work

  • A stick or pencil

  • A microwave and a microwave-safe container (we used a 2-cup glass measuring cup)

First make the wick:

  • Cut a length of cotton twine about twice the length you ultimately want

  • Melt a small amount of wax - just enough to soak the twine. Microwave on high for about 5 minutes or until liquid.

  • When the wax is melted, soak the twine in the wax for few seconds. Then remove the twine and lay out straight to cool. (You can lay it on parchment.)

  • That's your wick!

Now prepare your mold:

  • Ideal molds are waxed paper containers such as milk containers or other food containers. They should be clean. They are easy to cut or tear off after the wax cools.

  • Cut off the top

  • Make sure your mold is at least 1/2" taller than your desired candle

Set up the wick:

  • Tie the wick to a stick or pencil and bend the bottom of the wick 90°, so that when you lay the stick across the top of your mold, the folded bottom of the wick rests on the bottom of the mold container. Use a few drops of wax to secure the wick in the center of the bottom of the mold. Make sure the wick is as close to straight up and down as possible.

Melt the wax:

  • Put your wax shavings in a microwave-safe dish like a glass measuring cup and microwave on high for about 5 minutes. I recommend starting with 3-4 minutes and then heating for additional time 1 minute at a time.
WARNING: wax is very flammable (that's how candles work) and has a low flash point. So don't ever leave the microwave unattended while heating wax. This is also why you need a double boiler if you want to melt wax on the stove-top.

  • When wax is melted, pour into the mold. Make sure the wick is still straight. Set aside to cool overnight.

  • Enjoy!

Additions:

  • For some color, you can add crayon shavings to your wax while you melt it. Or food coloring. Or old birthday candles.

  • You can also add some flower petals, or essential oils.
